在運(yùn)動(dòng)比賽中常用嗚槍作為“開(kāi)始起跑”的信號(hào)，所以 jump the gun 這個(gè)片語(yǔ)指的是“在正式嗚槍之前就先偷跑”。在日常生活當(dāng)中老美常用 jump the gun 來(lái)指“太早行動(dòng)”，也就是 start too early 的意思。比方說(shuō)人家明明規(guī)定是 15 號(hào)發(fā)薪水，但是你硬要 14 號(hào)去問(wèn)人家支票下來(lái)了沒(méi)，旁人就可以規(guī)勸他：“Don't jump the gun because they usually start distributing paychecks on the 15th. (不要太早去，因?yàn)樗麄兺ǔＪ逄?hào)才開(kāi)始發(fā)薪水。)”當(dāng)然遜一點(diǎn)的講法也可以用“Don't go too early.” 來(lái)代替這個(gè) “Don't jump the gun.”

我的老美朋友還告訴我，jump the gun 還常用來(lái)指一個(gè)人在不明就理的情況下亂發(fā)脾氣 (get mad at someone too early，也是有 too early 的意思在里面) ，例如今天有人上門(mén)來(lái)要債，一進(jìn)門(mén)不分清紅皂白就先把我罵一頓，但他連我是不是債主都不知道，這時(shí)就可以說(shuō)：“Hey! Don't jump the gun. What's up? (喂，不要太早生氣，到底發(fā)生了什么事?)”　或是上次我室友開(kāi)車(chē)被警察攔下來(lái)，他自認(rèn)沒(méi)做錯(cuò)什么，劈頭就和警察伯伯理論了起來(lái)，結(jié)果警察告訴他：“Don't jump the gun. I just want to remind you to close the gas tank cap. (不要太快生氣，我只是想提醒你油箱蓋忘了關(guān)上了。)”
