讀者 Pico 問：collaborate 跟 cooperate 有什么分別？
兩個字都有合作的意思，指雙方面或多方面各自付出努力完成共同的任務，也有些英漢字典這樣解釋這兩個字。
但 collaborate 所表達的主動性、積極以及參與的程度比較高，而 cooperate 較接近配合、協同之意，有時只要不是故意搗亂，就可以算是 cooperate 了。例如：重陽掃墓，交通繁忙，警方呼吁群眾合作，不要使用私人車輛，這時候說 "The police asks for the public's cooperation" 就可以了。
另一方面，兩個科學家多年來一同項研究，從構思命題、撰寫研究建議書、實驗、報告、到最后研制產品等，雙方都付出相當的精力時間，我們當然可以說 "The two scientists cooperate on the project"，但如果換上 collaborate 的話，意思就更精確了。
